Oral Hygiene Educator

This ia a qualified, registered and BDA approved dental proffesional who's aim is to work alongside the dentist and hygienist aswell as other health professionals. Visits to the Oral Hygiene Educator are recommended either as a treatment need, appointment or an ongoing preventative measure.

Just 3 minutes after an appointment with your hygienist a layer of soft plaque will form in your mouth. Removal of this soft substance is the most important part of your daily oral hygiene routine. Once this layer of plaque has formed, food consumed throughout the day will stick to the surfaces of the teeth which, in time if not removed, will begin to break down the tooth surface resulting in cavities. This layer of plaque will also attract lots of bacteria which will breed along the gum margin and inbetween your teeth aswell, if not removed the bacteria will irritate the gums, causing inflammation and in time gum disease.
When this soft plaque is left on the teeth and along the gum margins it will start to harden as it mineralises with your saliva. Once this plaque has hardened in to what is commonly known as tartar it can only be removed by the dental hygienist. If not removed by the dental hygienist the bacteria in this hardened substance will begin to break down the supporting structures of the teeth, such as, the gum fibers, ligaments and also some supporting bone, resulting in tooth loss.

The role of the Oral Hygiene Educator is to teach and demonstrate the importance of a regular effective oral hygiene routine by informing you of all products, teaching coping methods and techniques for inbetween routine appointments to the dentist or hygienist.

Oral health means much more then just healthy teeth, it means being free of chronic oral-facial pain conditions to improve your oral and general health and eradicate the need for costly and lengthy dental and hygiene appointments.
